Investigation And Analysis Of The Active Factors To Address The Defect In Plastic Injection Molding Process
Abstract
Current manufacturing practices focuses on economy of operation. Being the versatile manufacturing process, it
tries to fulfill the economic expectation through technological benefits. Also the need for product quality, energy consumption
and pollution control is increasing enormously. The manufacturing of mass production of plastic parts most economically
process used is plastic injection molding process. While when using this process, different parameters such as injection speed,
melting temperature, injection pr ,holding pr, holding time ,cooling time must be considered to get good quality of the
product. Thus it made this process to be optimized. There are various defects which needed to overcome hence, common
defects that observed in industry during visit which can be introduces & make the product un-useful or reject are may be of
1) Flash
2) Shrinkage
3) Warpage
4) Sink marks
5) Short-shot
6) Bending deflections
7) Weld lines etc.
To overcome these defects & to produce a plastic part with good quality with less rejection percentage we are going to
implement Taguchi’s Approach. in this project “Flash” defects in plastic part are considered only.
Taguchi approach divided into 3 different stages to optimize this process as:
1) To minimize the number of experiments (runs) carried out by Orthogonal Array (O.A.).
2) Finding out most optimal parameters (settings) affecting on process.
3) By ANOVA technique, finding out how much (percentage) each parameter affects on process for that particular part. In
project work one of the major defects which are causing the maximum of defect & rejection is to be considered for a particular
plastic part.
