Abstract : Five axis peripheral milling is generally widely used on planar surfaces or on ruled surfaces with aim of improving material removal rate (mrr) to be more efficient than end milling methods. 5 axis peripheral milling machining strategy is almost never developed on sculptured surfaces (highly contoured surface), as it will find many interferences so that it requires a special method to controlling of tool orientation. The complexity of sculptured surface can be seen from various normal vector direction of surface where the direction changes rapidly from one area to another. This can cause a lot of interference if tool orientation is not controlled properly. The initial effort to reduce interference (gouging), especially in the machining of 5-axis peripheral milling developed in this study was to apply an alternative tool orientation. The method development is aims to maximize machining of sculptured surfaces with 5-axis peripheral milling. To ensure that the method created in the 5-axis peripheral milling strategy can be applied, it is simulated in 3-dimensional modeling. Results of the method have been successfully displayed in 3D simulations and prove that the process of peripheral milling simulation with an alternative method of tool orientation runs effectively adjusting curvature on sculptured surface and the method developed is effective for use in subsequent development of peripheral milling based on faceted model. Keyword – 5-axis Peripheral Milling, Tool Orientation Tool, Faceted Model
