Competencies in Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Business Teachers in Thailand’s Vocational School: A Synthesisunder 21st Century Education Framework
Abstract
Business teachers have been facing instructional challenges under rapid changes of economical, sociocultural and
technological factors at present days. Nowadays, competencies of business teachers in cyber society have been totally
changed from the past. Recently a number of researchers especially in mathematics and science education investigated socalled
Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and then developed PCK competency framework for mathematics and
science teachers. Yet, few PCK researches for business teachers have been done brought about no explicit framework
towards PCK competencies of business teachers for further implementations. This research aimed to investigate PCK
competencies of business teachers in Thailand’s vocational schools nationwide by considering the 21st century education
context, and to explore how business teachers perceive their existing PCK competencies. Result from this phase revealed a
PCK competency framework consisted of 68 items of competency. Questionnaires were administered based on the
mentioned framework then been sent to 1,350 business teachers in vocational schools nationwide. 419 copies or 31 percent
of questionnaires were returned. Results from questionnaires showed that business teachers perceived their strong
competency that related to being a good teacher but they perceived their lower competencies in the integration of English
language in teachings, the production of instructional media for learning development, and updating of knowledge on
workplace innovations and ‘how-to’. The result went round literatures related to a number of concerns towards the
integration of English language in classroom as well as the instructional media development to interest new generation
learners.
