Paper Title
Design Optimization and Flow Analysis of Cross Flow Turbine (500 W)

Abstract
In a hydro-power project, water turbine is one of the most important parts of the generating of electricity. The main purposes of this thesis are to develop the living standard in rural areas and to reduce the use of non-renewable energy. Crossflow turbines are commonly used in low-head small hydro systems. A crossflow turbine is a unique type of hydroturbine in that the flow passes twice through the runner. Therefore, the power is extracted in two stages. The feasibility of hydraulic turbine, theory of cross-flow turbine, detail design calculation, model design of 500 Watts Cross-Flow Turbine are described .This paper contains a complete set of detail drawings for manufacturing of a 500 Watts Cross-Flow Turbine. It can be used at sites which head is 1.5 m and flow rate is 0.045 m3/s. For the given capacity, the dimensions of turbine diameter and length are 330 mm and 295 mm. The performance analysis of Cross-Flow Turbine can be predicted by numerical analysis. The runner speed is 141 rpm and number of blades is 21 blades. The angle of nozzle inlet is 16° and the inlet blade angle is 30° respectively. The objective of this work is to characterize the two stage power transfer in the runner. Moreover, the purpose of this study is also both to test the performance of a low cost cross-flow turbine and to observe on the efficiency of a low cost Cross-flow turbine. The maximum efficiency of the turbine is 85%. The model design of this turbine consists of the preparing of blades, runner, nozzle and other components. All components of this turbine are made by mild steel. Keywords - Cross-Flow Turbine, Model design, two stage power, maximum efficiency
