Paper Title
Carbon Nanotube Spun Thread for Industrial Applications
Abstract
As grown carbon nanotubes are spun into thread using an innovative mechanism. This method involves
simultaneous spinning and drawing. Spun thread is also wound onto a spool as soon as it is formed via simultaneous
spinning and drawing. Two separate motors are used for spinning and drawing. The drawing motor also winds the pulled
thread onto a spool. The axis of rotation of two motors are orthogonal to each other. At a very low drawing speed the
drawing motor runs with jerk imparting impulsive force resulting in disintegration of thread from the array. For continuous
production of uniform thread from carbon nanotube array, a magnetic coupling is used with the winding motor. Such carbon
nanotube threads have revolutionized material world with their potential applications as structural fibers having sensing
capabilities.
