Abstract : The ever-increasing prices of fossil fuels have created a state of depleting supplies, un-sustainability and envi-ronmental pollution problems. The challenge is to obtain an adequacy of energy supplies at minimum cost. One possible alternate fuel is to use Bio-Diesel, plant-based oil produced from the trans-esterification reaction using methanol and KOH as a catalyst. Here, 3 different samples of waste cooking oil (WCO) soybean, sunflower & rice bran oil was used for the Bio-Diesel production using KOH as a catalyst. Bio-Diesel had been prepared by trans-esterification reaction in a water bath using KOH as a catalyst. The parameters were 0.5% KOH per 100g of oil & 6:1 Methanol with 1 hour as the reaction time & 65-degree centigrade as water bath temperature. The 3 obtained bio-diesel samples were then tested on a Variable Compres-sion Engine (VCR) under different loads to measure parameters like brake thermal efficiency, indicated thermal efficiency, mechanical efficiency & specific fuel consumption. The objective of the present research is to study the different oils for bio-diesel preparation and to suggest a better one. This paper is also meant to explore technical feasibility of waste cooking oils in VCR engine without any substantial modifications in the engine design.
