Abstract : Three clay samples from the west area of Chania, Crete, Greece were calcined at 600 oC and reacted
with saturated lime, to assess their pozzolanic activity for potential use as cement substitutes. Marl limestone
was calcined at 800 oC and then hydrated to assess its binding capacity. The silica and alumina minerals of the
calcined clays and marl limestone after reaction with lime and hydration, respectively,yielded calcium silicate
hydrate (CSH) and calcium aluminate hydrate (CAH), which contribute to the hardening of plasters and mortars.
Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis (DTA-TG) indicated the evolution
of CSH and CAH over time through the progressive reduction of portlandite and the identification of CSH and
CAH. In the clay with the lower calcite and higher kaolinite content the lime consumption over time is more
rapid than that of the other clays. Therefore, this clay can be effectively used as an addition to cement mortars to
provide a hydraulic binder.Calcined marl limestone can effectively substitute part of cement due to the hydraulic
compound formation uponhydration.
