Abstract : This paper focuses on the design and structural analysis of main shaft for rice polishing machine by changing
three different materials. Failure of the main shaft is occurred due to tensile, shear, bending and torsional stresses. This is the
major source of the main shaft failure of rice polishing machine. Failure of the main shaft can be reduced by choosing
suitable material. The motor power of the machine is 1.5 hp and rotational speed is 1440 rpm. This motor uses v-belt
transmission system to drive the main shaft. The diameter of the main shaft is 22mm.The number of belts is 2 belts. ASME
code equation is used to design the main shaft for rice polishing machine. ANSYS 17.0 software is used to analyze the
structural analysis of main shaft with material of AISI 1020, ASTM A514 structural steel, ASTM A220 Cast Iron.
Theoretical and numerical von-Mises stress values are 58.6MPa and 60.647MPa. The theoretical and numerical effective
strain values are 2.473×10-4 and 2.6857×10-4. Moreover, the von-Mises stress and effective strain value of AISI 1020
material is less than other two materials. The theoretical and numerical von-Mises stress values of the main shaft is less than
the allowable stress of the main shaft. So the design of the main shaft is satisfied. Therefore, the suitable material of the main
shaft for rice polishing machine is AISI 1020.
