Abstract : Structures should have sufficient capacity to resist damage after natural actions such as earthquake events. In this
paper, the seismic capacity of typical midrise reinforced concrete moment-resisting frames with reduced stiffness in
elevation is evaluated, where the cross-sections of the frame columns are reduced every three stories. The evaluation of the
seismic performance is carried by the static pushover analysis, in which the RC MRF is modeled using non-linear properties
of the plastic hinges. The main damage states of fully operational, immediate occupancy, life safety, and collapse prevention
are identified based on the global capacity of the RC MRFwhich is expressed by its maximum interstory drift ratio. The local
capacity of each structural member based on the flexural rotation at locations of the plastic hinges along member length is
also identified. The results obtained from the static pushover analysis show that the seismic capacity, damage state, and
ductility strength reduction factor of the RC MRF are affected by the reduced stiffness in elevation.Yet, the seismic
performance continues to be comparable to the reference RC MRF during several states of damage.
