Paper Title :

Author :Maki Kurumi

Article Citation :Maki Kurumi , (2023 ) " Transitivity Analysis of Japanese Short Story ‘Gongitsune’ by Nankichi Niimi " , International Journal of Management and Applied Science (IJMAS) , pp. 51-55, Volume-9,Issue-7

Abstract : This study investigates whether the storyof "Gongitsune," which has been recognized in Japanese elementary schools as a teaching tool for learning about the emotions of the story's main characters, is similar from a linguisticperspective. This paper will focus on the linguistic features chosen by the author and the emotions of the characters. For this purpose, theauthor applies the systematic functional language theory presented by Halliday, recognizing all processes, participants, and situations from the entire "Gongitsune" text, which the researcher analyzed manually and altruistically. The results of the analysis were organized in the form of tables and graphs. The result presented in this study were validated by qualitative methods, which clearly showed that mental processes predominate throughout the text, both in English (25.00%) and Japanese (23.58%), and that the mail character‟s emotional monologue expressed throughout the text. Keywords - Japanese, English, Emotion, NankichiNiimi, Gongitsune, SFL, Transitivity analysis, Situational element
